I guess you have a choice......either give in to terrorists, or try to defeat them.

MAR. 15, 2004: A WIN FOR TERROR
Terrorism has won a mighty victory in Spain. The culprits who detonated those bombs of murder on 3/11 intended to use murder to alter the course of Spanish democracy – and they have succeeded.

In the months since the attacks on the World Trade Center, we have all heard – and ourselves often repeated – much brave talk about how terror cannot prevail, how justice must inevitably win through, etc. etc. etc.

The news from Spain suggests how very wrong those hopes were.

People are not always strong. Sometimes they indulge false hopes that by lying low, truckling, appeasing, they can avoid danger and strife. Sometimes they convince themselves that if only they give the Cyclops what he wants, they will be eaten last. And this is what seems to have happened in Spain.

Unlike the 9/11 attacks in the United States – which were intended as acts of propaganda to influence the Arab and Muslim world – the 3/11 attacks against Spain were acts of propaganda aimed at the local market. And again unlike 9/11, this time the terrorists succeeded brilliantly. They helped to defeat a government committed to joining the war against them – and helped elect a government whose leading members not so quietly dream of a separate accommodation.

From a human point of view, the carnage of 3/11 is a tragedy without purpose or meaning. But from a political point of view, 3/11 was aimed at a result – and it achieved it. The new socialist government of Spain will be a far less willing ally of the United States. Indeed, this attack against Spain may well succeed in pre-emptively knocking Spain out of the war in the way that Pearl Harbor was intended – but failed – to knock out the United States in 1941.

Lesson: terrorism can work. Prediction: therefore expect more of it. Expect more terrorism aimed at the United Kingdom, against Australia, against Poland, and – ultimately – against the United States. For the terrorists must now wonder: If murder can influence elections in Spain – why not in the United States?

In the United States, the terrorists have to make a very fine calculation: Which would hurt President Bush, their supereme enemy, more – to attack or not to attack?

Those who know American politics well would probably answer: choice number two. The more time goes by without a terrorist attack, the less President Bush benefits from his prestige as a war leader – and the more the national conversation turns to new subjects on which President Bush holds less of an advantage. On the other hand, the terrorists may be less sophisticated. They may hope to defeat their enemy George W. Bush in the same way that they defeated their enemy Jose Aznar. In which case – brace yourselves.

I was thinking the same thing, Kman.

Of course, another way to look at it would involve recognising that Spaniards overwhelmingly opposed the war in Iraq (a full 90%, in fact) meaning that yesterday's protest vote against the Popular Party is a win for democracy. That Islamic terrorism has landed on its own doorstep is the fallout of Aznar's decision to join the US despite popular resistance may be a point well taken by other coalition countries.

Its just another form of appeasment...just like what France has done in their schools.Instead of being teaching tolerance of other religions, they banned any type of religious symbol because they are afraid of muslims...so the came out with a blanket policy of no religious symbols in schools.Which was just a way of taking away from about 90 other religions to apease terroist religion of Islam....fxckin chickenshits.

[q] MAR. 15, 2004: A WIN FOR TERROR[/q]

But Kman, my dear man, how can this be true? Boosh repeatedly is telling us that he’s winning every singe battle in his “War on Terror” and at that, not only for America, oops I meant for “Free World” but for his allies as well.

Let me ask you a question: if Aznar’s PP was reelected will this be a ‘Win for Democracy” instead? Is it possible that this may be another “win” in “War on Terror” despite 200+ dead?
As well, what is your grasp on Spain as nation and Spanish society and politics?

BtW what is source for this nice piece of “your opinion”?

Dr - It is an opinion piece from nationalreview.com, but it is of my opinion also.

Surely you know that the world as a whole needs to fight terrorism and that the US can not protect every country in the world.

It's interesting, this cause-and-effect paradox and how its view is so different:

AQ:
cause = US MidEast intervention
effect = 9/11

cause = Iraq invasion
effect = 3/11

US:
cause = 9/11
effect = Afghan invasion

cause = 9/11
effect = Iraq invasion

Neutral:
cause = fundamentalist power
effect = civilian deaths

To think that more terroist attacks were or are soley because of Iraq is naive.
Italy and Britain are certainley on the docket but a country like France has already capitulated AGAIN,they don't know it but their problem is going to be twice as bad...mark my words.
9/11 was a result of non action not pro action.
To think that no response to 9/11 or other attacks would result in no attacks is simply absurd.
Other than that...whats up buttercup???

I am so busy I could scream, but thanks for asking.

To counter; believing that last week's attack in Madrid are not a direct response to Spain's involvement in the Iraq invasion is completely irresponsible. You know I don't purport tolerating terrorism, and supported the hunt for Osama, but if you don't think the Iraq question is going to come back to bite you in the ass, then you simply don't want to believe it.

Frankly, I think Bush and Bin Laden should have it out in a public arena -- two cowardly jackasses.

I like your last thought best.

I agree with that but I can't help but think that this will embolden Al Queda for other attacks.

Hey, just think its only monday...glass of wine and a hot bath willtake of everything else.

The Spanish culture is weak, as massively proven by their appeasement to these Muslim, terrorist scumbags. Weak. They took that one hook, line and sinker. Why am I not surprised? Terrorism is OK with the Spanish, as long as it doesn't happen in their country. Is there anybody willing to stand up to these evil f*cks other than the U.S.A.?

Wait, I thought Al Qaida hated Saddam and had no connection to Iraq?

You guys need to get your stories straight.

And Aznar was leading in every poll before the train attacks. So this election was a mass act of appeasement by about 60% of the Spanish population. I guess many in Europe never learn from history.

This is a weak culture we're talking about. Like water, they seek the path of least resistance.

Howard Dean was leading before the Iowa caucuses as well.

The fact of the matter is that the Spanish, right or wrong, are blaming Aznar for last week's attacks. I am sure they are also more than a little unimpressed with his immediate move to put the blame on ETA, and skew this event to work in his political favour.

Al Qaeda and Saddam do/did hate one another. However, any attack by the US on any Muslim, will result in a 'your enemy is my enemy' mentality whether the two were friends to begin with or not. Bin Laden is as much an opportunist as Bush, and Iraq was a royalty-free marketing campaign for him.

Regardless of your spin and your hatred of President Bush, the Spanish people, as a result of the train attacks, voted for the candidate who will be weaker on the fight against terror as an appeasement to the terrorists.

History has ALWAYS shown that appeasement and weakness only invites (and results in) more violence against you.

Spain has guaranteed that the people of other European nations will be attacked and soon.

Canada will also find itself in the crosshairs soon. Remember that Canada has troops in Afghanistan hunting Al Qaeda right now and because of the appeasement by the Spanish, attacks will soon be directed against all countries fighting terrorism.

Actually, 9/10 spaniards didn't want to get involved.

The Gov said piss off, we're getting involved.
A truckload of Spaniards get blown up.

The people said fine, you can piss off too, we'll find someone else.

Its called democracy, the people have voted for what they want.

Obviously those massive demonstrations in Madrid had undercurrents.

It just shows you how fuxxing clueless the mainstream media is, (unless they knew about it but hid it.)

There wasn't even a sniff of it until it happened.
--------------------------------------

As far as zero appeasement is concerned.

The Israelis have been kicking the living shit out of the Palestinians for years.

So how come the security situation there is at an all time low?
The Berlin wall Mk2 construction is in full swing as a last gasp resort, because zero appeasement has utterly failed as a solution.

That Zero appeasement BTW, is backed up by US firepower and $$'s, the Israelies just pull the trigger.
9/11 was a direct consequence of that zero appeasement policy.
Most of the kit out there has a "made in the USA" or "Bought by the USA" stamp on it.

A thought -- why doesn't the US recruit thousands of Pakistani-Americans and Arab-Americans to go undercover and find these Al Qaeda guys!? They could just pretend they are looking to become mujahideen after getting disillusioned with American life. It seems much easier, less expensive, and more to the point than taking out regimes that are only loosely related to them!? What am I missing here!?

Floyd:

If you still insist that the invasion of Iraq had anything to do with the 'war on terror' then you'll never understand the position of the Spanish and other civilians worldwide who opposed the war.

When misguided and misplaced actions by a gov't results in two previously opposed enemies using a common ground and a common hatred to a predictable end, then that gov't should be held responsible. Do you believe Spain would have been a target last week had it not been for their involvement in Iraq, a decision overwhelmingly opposed by its citizens?

No doubt last week's tragic bombings will result in a greater recruitment of Americans to stampede into the war on terror ... Bush will benefit from this catastrophe, and that is just as twisted as the Spaniards electing out the Popular Party.

They were mainly targetting Australians, another big supporter of Bush.
